Shariful Receives IEEE Photonics Society 2022 Graduate Student Scholarship

Primary tabs

Md Shariful Islam, a Ph.D. candidate in the Georgia Tech School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), has been selected for the 2022 Graduate Student Scholarship from the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS).

Each year, ten outstanding IPS student members from around the world are awarded the Graduate Student Scholarship. IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to the advancement of technology for the benefit of humanity. As an IEEE Society, IPS is a hub of more than 100,000 professionals dedicated to transforming scientific breakthroughs in quantum physics into applications such as photovoltaics, sensors, medical imaging and communications. The society facilitates networking and promotes professional growth within the photonics community.

Shariful’s doctoral research focuses on the study of the nonlinear dynamical properties of semiconductor laser diodes subjected to time-delay feedback, with emphasis on applications in microwave photonics and telecommunications. He is a member of the Photonics and Terahertz Group, led by Prof. David S. Citrin and adjunct professor and researcher Alexandre Locquet, located at Georgia Tech-Lorraine. The research group is part of the lab "Unité Mixte Internationale (UMI) 2958 Georgia Tech-CNRS", an international collaboration between the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Georgia Tech.

His research aims to shed new light on the fundamental understanding of the optoelectronic system using state-of-the-art experiments and comprehensive modeling. Applications such as ultra-pure radio frequency generation, microwave and optical combs, lidar and spectroscopy are some of the areas directly affected by his findings.

Shariful completed his undergraduate studies at Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) and earned his Master of Science from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) before joining Professor Citrin's team. He is a native of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, and is expected to graduate from Georgia Tech in the Fall of 2022.

In addition to Shariful, fellow ECE Ph.D. candidate, Sajjad Abdollahramezani, also received a Graduate Student Scholarship from IPS this year.
