Diane Alleva Cáceres, Ph.D. Candidate at The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, has been invited by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the University of Prince Edward Island (PEI) and the PEI BioAlliance industry association to give a talk February 13th in Canada on “Constructing Science-based Industries in the Globalization Era: The Case of Bioscience in Canada and its Regions.”

Her research project examines how regions within countries implement national bioscience strategies, interact with industry globally to design their own and to create effective bioscience institutions. Her talk highlights how established (Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia) and emerging (Atlantic Provinces) bioscience regions treat two critical areas, risk finance and skill development, differently and with surprising results. In addition, the presentation emphasizes that while established and emerging bioscience regions face different opportunities, both have room to develop through different types of innovation. National strategies and institutions often reflect these regional differences.
