Freedom in the Press: LibreTech Collective Guest Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Helsby

Primary tabs

Join us for an hour with Dr. Jennifer Helsby, Chief Technology Officer of the Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF), followed by open Q&A.

FPF maintains and develops SecureDrop, a free whistleblower submission system licensed under the GPLv3. SecureDrop runs on the Tor network and lets sources securely and anonymously share documents with journalists - and it's not a toy project. It's deployed by major news organizations around the world, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and ProPublica. Originally developed by the late transparency activist Aaron Swartz, SecureDrop has been maintained by FPF since 2013 and has helped break some of the biggest stories of the past decade.

Dr. Helsby oversees FPF's engineering teams and previously led development of SecureDrop itself. She holds a doctorate in astrophysics from the University of Chicago, was a founding engineer at Penumbra Labs working on privacy-preserving payments, and co-founded the Chicago-based civil liberties group Lucy Parsons Labs. She's an engineer, researcher, and self-described cypherpunk - and she's here to talk about it!

This is a rare chance to learn how you can get involved in SecureDrop and contribute to copyleft code that real people depend on in real life - software where privacy, security, and press freedom aren't afterthoughts but the whole point. Whether you're into security, Python, systems engineering, documentation, design, or translation, there's a place for you in the project.

Open to everyone, regardless of background - no CS experience needed. Just bring questions
