The School of City and Regional Planning Fall Lecture Series kicks off with a guest lecture drawing on evolutionary biology, anthropology, economic history, demography, neuroscience, and archaeology, exploring life in cities.

Sean Fox is Professor of Geography & Global Development and Director of the Planetary Urban Sciences Lab (PLUSLab or +Lab) at Bristol University in the UK. His research explores the causes and consequences of global urbanization, the political economy of urban governance, and sustainable city futures. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics, has published dozens of scientific articles, and is co-author of the book Cities and Development (Routledge 2016). He is currently writing a macro-history of global urbanization for Princeton University Press titled How we became urban: A natural history of human congregation, upon which this lecture is based. Fox argues that there is nothing more quintessentially human than living — and thriving — in cities.
