event
SharePoint Access By Design: Groups and Permission Structure
Primary tabs
This session will focus on advanced, previously untapped practices without repeating prior content.
Led by Robb Lioy, Microsoft Cloud Solution Architect, the session dives into the behind‑the‑scenes access model for SharePoint sites and libraries using SharePoint groups, deliberate permission inheritance, site‑level sharing defaults, and practical patterns that reduce one‑off exceptions.
Key Topics:
- Designing SharePoint groups for Owners, Members, Visitors, plus custom groups for sensitive libraries and folders
- Using permission inheritance intentionally at site, library, folder, and item scope, including when to break and how to restore
- Understanding Limited Access and surfacing unique permissions with built‑in tools like Manage Access and Check Permissions
- Setting site‑level sharing and link defaults for least‑privilege sharing, including Specific people, Existing access, and People in our organization (GT tenant)
- Managing external sharing from the site owner perspective, reviewing and adjusting access without scripts or workflow tools
- Auditing and cleanup routines using built‑in SharePoint permission pages to identify and fix unique permissions that have accumulated over time
Note: This session will be recorded for those unable to attend live.
