Coca-Cola Foundation Chair, Katya Scheinberg selected for 2025 Class of SIAM Fellows

Primary tabs

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) announced the 2025 Class of SIAM Fellows. These field professionals have been recognized for their outstanding research and service to the community, contributing significantly to the advancement of applied mathematics, computational science, and data science.

Among the 25 members of the community being honored is Katya Scheinberg, a Coca-Cola Foundation Chair and Professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. Professor Scheinberg is also a Gary C. Butler Family Faculty Fellow.

Her recognition as a SIAM Fellow is attributed to her foundational contributions to derivative-free optimization and optimization applications in data science, as well as her dedicated service to the optimization community. Notably, she is one of only two professors from Georgia Tech to receive this prestigious honor in 2025.

Professor Scheinberg's career includes positions at Cornell University, Lehigh University, and the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center.

Born in Moscow, Russia, she earned her undergraduate degree in operations research from Lomonosov Moscow State University and her Ph.D. in operations research from Columbia University.

Her research focuses on developing practical algorithms and their theoretical analysis for various problems in continuous optimization, including convex optimization, machine learning, and quadratic programming.

She co-authored the book "Introduction to Derivative Free Optimization" and has recently focused on probabilistic methods and stochastic optimization in machine learning and reinforcement learning.

ISyE congratulates Professor Scheinberg and the other Fellows, who will be recognized during a reception at the SIAM/CAIMS Annual Meetings in Montréal, Québec, Canada in July 2025.
