Precision spectroscopy in microfabricated vapor cells for compact atomic clocks.

Matt Hummon is a Physicist and Project Leader in the Atomic Devices and Instrumentation group in the Time & Frequency Division at NIST. His current research interests focus on the integration of photonic structures with miniature atomic systems for compact, fieldable quantum devices and sensors. He received his Ph.D. at Harvard University in the group of John Doyle studying cold molecular collisions and completed a post-doc at JILA in the group of Jun Ye developing molecular laser cooling techniques.

Summary
For these devices to be adopted more broadly in industrial and commercial applications, transferring the spectroscopic techniques from the laboratory to an environmentally robust and manufacturable platform is desirable. I will discuss our group’s work on integrating laser spectroscopy of warm atomic vapors with single-mode waveguide nanophotonic structures. Additionally, I will discuss the development of two different compact optical clocks based on microfabricated vapor cells. One is based on a two-photon transition in rubidium, and the second is based on narrow line spectroscopy in warm strontium vapors.
