Inclusive Language: Transgender and Non-Binary Pronouns and Expressions in Foreign Language Classrooms

Language is political, hotly contested, always evolving, and deeply personal to all people who choose the terms with which they identify themselves. To show respect and awareness of these complexities, it is important to be attentive to language and to honor and use individuals’ self-referential terms.

What identity terms do we find appropriate and use for ourselves and for others? What transgender and non-binary pronouns and expressions are already available in English and languages other than English? Which pronouns do people use to indicate their trans* or non-binary identity? How can we use “they”, “she/they,” “he/they” in foreign-language classrooms?
