To show respect and awareness of these complexities, it is important to be attentive to language and to honor and use individuals’ self-referential terms.

What identity terms do we find appropriate and use for ourselves and for others? What transgender and non-binary pronouns and expressions are already available in English and languages other than English? Which pronouns do people use to indicate their trans* or non-binary identity? How can we use “they”, “she/they,” “he/they” in foreign-language classrooms?
