On August 27, 2021, Nunn School Professor of the Practice retired Admiral Sandy Winnefeld gave an interview on “CBS This Morning”. Admiral Winnefeld graduated from Georgia Tech in 1978 and subsequently served in the United States Navy. While on CBS, the Former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff gave his thoughts on the conflict occurring in Afghanistan. He described the number of different attack vectors the US needs to account for and that troops on the ground should change their tactics when facing new kinds of threats. Winnefeld detailed how far the US has come with its counterterrorism tactics but that we still need to keep a focus on the generational threat of terrorism that we are facing. He also spoke of the problem of gathering intelligence due to the infrastructure of ISIS. Admiral Winnefeld’s concluding remarks praised the hard work of the US troops and State Department employees on the ground.
