Museum Exhibits: Postage Required and Marvelous Marbling

Primary tabs

Postage Required: Animated Postcards from the 1900s
Exhibition Dates:
April 11 - July 12, 2019

The animated postcard was a genre of card that had its greatest success in the first decade of the 20th century. Post cards were affordable mass communication, sent simply and as frequently as a text message today. The animated postcard was unique in that the images moved. People were moving more, traveling more, and as a result, sending cards more.

This exhibition features a variety of postcards that are on the move: tilt them, lift a flap, or pull a tab, and see something new. Explore the cutting-edge technology of a century ago.

Marvelous Marbling: Demystifying Marbled Papers
Exhibition Dates:
April 11 - July 12, 2019

The techniques used to marble papers were kept secret for most of the history of this craft. Assistants were each taught only part of the process, so that they could not go out on their own and compete with the master. Discover how these beautiful patterns are created, and learn about some of the early twentieth century practitioners of the craft.

Additional information: The Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking is located at 500 10th St NW. The museum is open Monday-Friday, 9-5. The museum is closed all Institute holidays.
