Georgia Tech CEISMC Summer Programs PEAKS Student Interest in STEM

Primary tabs

The summer season is seen as a great time to relax and wind down from a busy schoolyear. It can also be an opportunity for kids to develop skills from supplemental activities outside of the classroom. In the case of the latter, CEISMC takes a long yard leap to give students the chance to take workshops in robotics, coding, and much more.

Summer P.E.A.K.S. (Programs for Enrichment and Accelerated Knowledge in STEM) had yet another successful season this year. Looking back, check out some footage on a few of the programs we offered:

-Artbotics. This weeklong program allowed participants to program LEGO MINDSTORMS robots to create their own artistic masterpieces. Enrollment included rising 4th-6th graders. An advanced session was offered for those interested in furthering their programming skills.

-BioIgnite. CEISMC brought biology concepts to the middle school students in this weeklong program. Activities branched from learning the different types of cells that make up the human body to exploring recent fields of biomedical applications.

-Thrill a Minute: Roller Coaster Physics. For rising 7th-9th graders, this course exposed concepts behind designing the ultimate roller coaster. Think momentum; force; gravity: all go hand in hand to create the ultimate riding experience. Hands on activities included building and testing out miniature roller coasters. The week concluded with a field day at Six Flags over Georgia for an outlook of the amusement park from a different perspective.

-HS Game and App Academy.  With game development software Construct 2, high school students created their own interactive game prototypes to share with their friends and families. Students left the course with knowledge of app and game editing, design, and execution.

-Staying Focused: The Psychology of Attention. Think about effective communication, stellar study habits, and persuasive presentations. The art of staying focused is ingrained in the deep mental realms of your brain. High school students explored the fundamentals in psychology and the effects of various external parameter that can influence your attention span.

If you’re interested in enrolling your student in similar programs during the fall semester, check out CEISMC-operated K.I.D.S. Club (Kids Interested in Discovering Science Club)! K.I.D.S. Club offers hour-long hand-on sessions for grades 2 and up on select Saturdays during the Fall, Winter, and Spring.
