Honor Week: Focusing on Integrity at Georgia Tech

Primary tabs

Honor Week, hosted by the Georgia Tech Honor Advisory Council, is a week dedicated to educating students on their rights and promoting integrity throughout the Georgia Tech community.

The Honor Advisory Council (HAC) is made up of undergraduate and graduate students who serve as Honor Advisors and study all aspects of the Georgia Tech Honor Code. The group strives to improve honor awareness throughout the campus community.

"Students often do not realize the seriousness of their actions," said Kenji Tanaka, a computer engineering major and honor advisor. "Something as easy as sharing code in a computer science class can land a meeting with the Office of Student Integrity. Students often don't know their options once they are accused of a violation, such as resolution with the professor, and that an accusation does not automatically mean a person is guilty."

During the week of April 4, HAC will host several events to inform students about the Honor Code and enhance integrity throughout campus.

On Monday, students can attend two seminars regarding integrity and ethics. The first will include a discussion of integrity and its importance in academic settings, and will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. near the Post Office in the Student Center. A second seminar will give students the chance to learn about the Georgia Tech Honor Code, engage in discussion about its parameters, and discover their own values. This session takes place from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Room N210, the Howey Physics Building.

On Tuesday, HAC and Alpha Pi Mu host a Business Ethics Forum with guest speaker Dr. Jeanette Miller, a professional who will discuss how ethics is used in the real world.  The form takes place in the Student Success Center Festival Suite from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday is dedicated to stress relief. Students will be able to chat with members of the Honor Advisory Council, color, and pop bubble wrap from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center, near the Post Office.

On Thursday, from 11 a.m. to noon, HAC is leading an Honor Code Round table discussion in Room 131 of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the Honor Code and learn what the code states, with pizza provided.

In addition to these events, HAC is holding a raffle throughout Honor Week. Students can enter by answering answer the question, “What does integrity mean to you?” HAC members will be in the Student Center listening to students’ comments and entering students’ names for a chance to win $5 Starbucks gift cards. Winners will be announced on Friday at 4 p.m. on the HAC Facebook event page.

Honor Advisors are knowledgeable resources for students and faculty with questions about academic conduct. The main purpose of HAC is to achieve a more honorable academic environment at Georgia Tech through communication, collaboration, and action with students, faculty, and staff.

HAC uses the slogan "mind the gap" to represent its commitment to bridging the gap between students and the honor code. For more information about HAC or to get involved in the organization, visit www.honor.gatech.edu.
