“Velocity and Flame Wrinkling Characteristics of a Transversely Forced, Bluff-Body Stabilized Flame, Part I: Experiments and Data Analysis,” a paper co-authored by AE professor Timothy Lieuwen and AE research engineers Benjamin Emerson and Vishal Archarya, has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Read articles in the area of fluid mechanics for 2013.

Announcement of the honor came in late January from by Taylor & Francis, one of the most respected journal publishers of engineering, computer science and technology papers.

Researchers Ulises Mondragon , Christopher Brown, and Vincent McDonell are also listed as authors on the paper, which originally appeared in the June 26 edition of the Journal of Combustion Science & Technology. According to statistics maintained by the journal, the article was read in excess of 2,500 times.

“Tim Lieuwen’s emphasis on impactful scholarship is an inspiration to all of his colleagues here at Georgia Tech,” said AE School Chair Dr. Vigor Yang. “We are not surprised that so many outside our ranks also turn to his team’s research for perspective.”

The article describes measurements of the response of bluff-body stabilized flames to transverse acoustic waves. Among its conclusions is the observation that the flame's magnitude and phase characteristics are quite similar to those observed in much lower flow velocities.
