The Significance of the Museum

Primary tabs

Dean Jacqueline Royster joined Emory University professor Elizabeth Horner to discuss the significance of the museum on Georgia Public Broadcasting's show On Second Thought, a one hour daily news show hosted by Celeste Headlee. A free podcast of the conversation is available on the show's SoundCloud page.

A new $300 million museum has opened in Toronto, covering 10,000 square meters. Inside is a spectacular collection of Islamic art. It’s the first museum of its kind in North America and visitors from all over the world are flying there to see the treasures inside.

The Aga Khan Museum opened on September 18, 2014 and contains over one thousand artifacts and artworks and spans over one thousand years of history. The objects—in ceramic, metalwork, ivory, stone and wood, textile and carpet, glass and rock crystal objects, parchment and illustrated paintings on paper—present an overview of the artistic accomplishments of Muslim civilisations from the Iberian Peninsula to China.

Royster, Horner, and Headlee discuss the impact this and similar showcases of historical artifacts have on contemporary culture and the importance of preserving such objects. Dean Royster recently concluded an initiative of the Ivan Allen College, Africa Atlanta 2014, which included exhibitions in numerous galleries and was centered around KONGO across the WATERS, an art and artifact collection exploring connections between the art and culture of the Kongo peoples of western Central Africa and African American art and culture in the United States.
