Combining Organofluorine and Organic Electronic Materials Chemistry

It has long been predicted that fluorine substituents should enhance select (opto)electronic properties of organic electronic materials. The mutual attraction between highly fluorinated pi-electron systems and their non-fluorinated counterparts also affords relatively predictable control over bulk self-assembly. Various research programs have begun to demonstrate the benefits of fluorination, but few capitalize on the unique synthetic pathways offered by fluorinated arenes. This presentation will describe our efforts to exploit the special properties of fluorinated arenes for the synthesis of organic conjugated polymers and polycyclic aromatic compounds, with a major focus on supramolecular engineering of crystalline and "soft" materials.
