Biography

Sam Ock Park is currently Professor Emeritus of Economic Geography, Department of Geography, SNU; and Distinguished Professor, Department of Public Administration, Gachon University. He served as Dean of College of Social Sciences, SNU (2004-2006) and as the President of University Senate of Seoul National University (2007~August 31, 2011). He served as the President of Korean Regional Science Association (1997-2001), the President of Pacific Regional Science Conference Organization (PRSCO) (2000-2001), the President of Korean Geographical Society (2003-2004), and the Chair of the International Geographical Union Commission on the Dynamics of Economic Spaces (2000-2004). Councilor-at-Large of Regional Science Association-International (RSAI) (2009~). He also served as the Pacific Editor of Papers in Regional Science (1995-1997) and is currently an editorial board member of Regional Studies, Journal of Economic Geography, and Papers in Regional Science and Co-editor-in-Chief of The Korea Spatial Planning Review. He has published more than 160 articles in English and Korean including papers in international journals such as, Papers in Regional Science, Progress in Human Geography, Economic Geography, Environment and Planning A, Geoforum, Journal of Economic And Social Geography (TESG), and so on, and published 19 books on the locational dynamics of economic activities, regional development, high tech industries, industrial clusters and regional innovation systems. His recent research topics are regional innovation systems, industrial clusters, and dynamics of economic spaces. He received several awards such as the Best Paper of the Year by the Korea Federation of Science and Technology Societies (1997), the First Academic Award of Korean Geographical Society (2006), a Medal for Distinguished Activities of Research, SNU (2007), A National Distinguished Scholar in the field of Humanity and Social Sciences (2008). Dr. Park holds a BA and a MA in Geography, Seoul National University (SNU), and Ph. D. in Economic Geography in The University of Georgia.
