Film Futures: Chris Marker's Science Fiction and Cinematic Arts

Primary tabs

2 – 3:15 p.m. | Exploring Chris Marker’s La Jetée: Panel Discussion and Q&A

Told almost entirely through still photographs, Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962) is a haunting 28-minute journey through time, memory, and a world after catastrophe. More than sixty years later, it still shapes how filmmakers imagine the future. Four scholars will look at Marker’s short film from several angles: experimental and science-fictional modes of filmmaking, the relationship between cinema and the photographic image, and the ways the creative arts can take up science-fiction storytelling. The panel ends with an open Q&A, so bring your questions.

Featuring:

  • Stéphanie Boulard, Professor of French Literature and Visual Arts
  • Kristi McKim, Associate Professor of Film
  • Lisa Yaszek, Regents’ Professor of Science Fiction Studies
  • Ida Yoshinaga, Assistant Professor of Film
