Quantum sensors: An overview and applications


Abstract: It is an exciting time for quantum science and technology research. While the promise of quantum computers continues to motivate billions of dollars of investment by the U.S. government and private sector, quantum sensors have already revolutionized aspects of our daily life. Established technologies like atomic clocks in space underlie GPS and nearly all communication systems that rely on precise time and frequency synchronization. Related technologies like magnetometers are opening up new research frontiers in biomagnetism. At the same time, there remains a cutting edge achieved in research labs but not yet fielded. In this talk, Robert will give a brief overview of quantum sensors and some of their applications. He will discuss the broad topic of magnetic imaging, and the numerous applications that fall within that category. Throughout the talk, he will highlight the interplay between sensor development and signal processing.
