The reliable detection of buried electrical conductors is essential for utility mapping, infrastructure maintenance, and excavation safety, yet environmental factors such as soil moisture can influence measured magnetic field responses. This research presents a controlled experimental investigation of the effects of conductor presence and soil moisture on measured magnetic field signatures using a custom magnetic sensing system and frequency-domain analysis centered on a 3.111 kHz injected excitation. Three orthogonal magnetic field components were measured over a two-dimensional spatial grid under multiple experimental configurations, with quantitative analysis focused on the 3106–3116 Hz frequency region and the three-row spatial region. Peak FFT amplitudes, spatial difference maps, RMS differences, and mean absolute differences were used to compare conductor, moisture, and baseline conditions. The results demonstrate that conductor presence produces substantially larger and more spatially localized magnetic field perturbations than soil moisture alone, while moisture primarily modifies the magnitude and distribution of the conductor-induced response rather than masking it. The horizontal magnetic field components exhibited the greatest sensitivity to conductor presence, whereas the vertical component was more responsive to moisture-induced changes. These findings establish that combining targeted frequency-domain analysis with localized spatial measurements provides a robust and quantitative framework for distinguishing buried electrical conductors from environmental effects, laying the foundation for future automated buried infrastructure detection and classification systems.
