European Papermaking with Dr. Joran Proot
Primary tabs
The Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking will host European Papermaking with Dr. Joran Proot, a special lecture and workshop exploring the history and practice of traditional papermaking. The program begins with a lecture by historian Joran Proot, who studies early modern books and printing history.
During the lecture, Proot will discuss the materials and workflows used in papermaking across Europe during the early modern period. Participants will then take part in a hands-on workshop where they will learn classic Western papermaking techniques, including pulling, couching, and pressing sheets of handmade paper.
Open to all skill levels, the program provides an opportunity to experience the craft of papermaking while learning about its historical development and structure. The sheets created during the workshop will be available for pickup or shipping after they have dried.
The event is hosted collaboratively by Emory University and the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking. Participants must register in advance.
