2026 Global Media Festival: Screening of Los Bárbaros (Spain/Peru, 2024) and Q&A with Director Martín Guerra

Primary tabs

The screening is part of Georgia Tech’s annual Global Media Festival, a film and discussion series that connects international cinema with pressing social, cultural, and ethical questions. The 2026 theme, Sustaining Empathy in a Fractured World, frames empathy as an active and ongoing practice — one that must be maintained, especially in times of economic instability, political tension, and social fragmentation.

Los Bárbaros reflects this theme through its portrayal of young people facing economic uncertainty and limited opportunity during Spain’s financial crisis. By focusing on everyday struggles and relationships, the film highlights how empathy and solidarity persist even under structural pressure.

The 2026 Global Media Festival includes 11 total events, featuring 10 international film screenings, each followed by conversations with directors, scholars, or invited guests. A new introductory directing workshop has also been added this year to give students hands-on insight into storytelling and filmmaking.

All screenings are free and open to the public, and each concludes with national food offerings to encourage continued informal discussion and community engagement.
