EAS Graduate Alumni Engagement Seminar Series - Dr. Joe Estep

Primary tabs

I’ll trace my path from being a student in the Ford ES&T building to managing exploration geophysics in a Fortune 20 company, connecting technical excellence with organizational savvy. I’ll compare academic and industry environments—what endures (rigor, problem framing, uncertainty quantification) and what changes (pace, decision context, collaboration at scale)—with high-level examples from applied geophysics. I’ll also share why I returned to school at MIT and how that experience sharpened my perspective on social context and organizational behavior. Finally, I’ll discuss the transition from individual contributor to manager: influencing without authority, communicating science to drive decisions, and building teams.
