Bio: Dr. John Russell is Vice President of Business Development-Defense for Fives, Inc. John identifies opportunities and builds relationships across the defense industrial base for factory equipment needs such as fiber placement, material removal, automation, and additive manufacturing. He also develops partnerships with universities, consortia, and federal research laboratories to advance the state of the art in manufacturing equipment to bring value to the Department of War.
Prior to Fives, John retired after a 34 year career at the Air Force Research Laboratory where he held a variety of leadership roles in the development and execution of R&D programs in design and manufacturing for Air Force aircraft.
He is a Fellow of SME and the Air Force Research Laboratory. He on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Board of Directors and is a member of the National Materials and Manufacturing Board (part of the National Academy of Engineering).
John has a Doctor of Science degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
Abstract: Automated lay up of aerospace composite structures improves manufacturing precision, reduces scrap, and accelerates throughput over manual processes. This presentation provides an overview of Fives’ advanced automation technologies for aerospace composite manufacturing, including automated fiber placement (AFP), automated tape placement (ATP), and in-process inspection system of those processes.
