Technical Lecture: Medium Voltage Solid State Transformers in Megawatt Charging Applications
Primary tabs
Solid-state transformers (SSTs) are emerging as a key technology in DC infrastructure, offering compact system design by replacing bulky line-frequency transformers with high-frequency switched converters. Among these, the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) topology has gained significant attention and is actively deployed in DC megacharger applications at the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT).
This session will focus on the implementation of DAB modules for medium-voltage (MV) SSTs in megawatt-level charging applications. Various charging configurations will be explored, highlighting both their opportunities and limitations. Key challenges in MV power electronics converter design will be addressed, along with SST-based solutions that overcome these barriers. Finally, hardware development results and experimental validation will be shared to demonstrate the practical feasibility and performance of DAB-based SSTs in real-world MW charging scenarios. The session aims to highlight both the technological advances achieved at AIT and the remaining research gaps, providing a clear outlook on how DAB-based SSTs can enable the next generation of ultra-fast DC charging infrastructure.
