The objective of the proposed research is to evaluate the long-term performance of environmentally friendly insulation systems in gas-insulated technologies by investigating their dielectric behavior under electrical stress. There has been growing attention on whether SF6-free technologies in gas-insulated systems (GIS) can reliably match the performance of SF6 while maintaining long-term electrical stability. This proposal aims to address several critical open questions and outline investigative approaches concerning the dielectric reliability, material compatibility, and long-term aging behavior of insulation systems subjected to electrical stress. These efforts are aligned with the broader goal of advancing environmentally friendly gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technologies that reduce dependence on SF6, a potent greenhouse gas. Recognizing a significant gap in the current literature—particularly regarding comprehensive studies on accelerated aging mechanisms—this research seeks to improve our understanding of how both gaseous and solid insulation materials respond to prolonged electrical stress, especially under conditions that simulate practical high-voltage applications. The study focuses on corona and surface discharge phenomena, which are known to drive insulation degradation over time. Two alternative gas mixtures to SF6 are selected—one fluorinated and one non-fluorinated—based on their environmental profiles and potential applicability in GIS environments. A key contribution of this work is the development and implementation of a novel accelerated aging methodology. This approach is designed to induce corona-related degradation at voltages near the breakdown threshold while carefully managing test conditions to avoid unrelated or premature failure modes. Finally, the proposal includes a comparative analysis of the resulting surface degradation in various solid dielectric materials exposed to these stressors, aiming to provide valuable insights into insulation performance and enabling more informed material selection and system design for next-generation, eco-friendly GIS technologies.
