The objective of the proposed research is to improve the autonomy, flexibility, linearity, and bandwidth of optical communication systems by developing and experimentally demonstrating several new technologies. The technologies developed are blind subcarrier demodulation, an optoelectronic oscillator, a linearized optical modulator, and a high-speed micro-ring modulator. Blind subcarrier demodulation permits detection of subcarrier multiplexed signal configuration (e.g. number of subcarriers, subcarrier baud rates, etc.) and demodulation with minimal prior knowledge for autonomous network operation. An integrated optoelectronic oscillator design enables widely tunable low-phase noise microwave signal generation for flexible radio access networks. An on-chip linearized Mach-Zehnder Modulator design permits broadband third-harmonic distortion cancellation for analog optical links. High bandwidth micro-ring modulators permit broadband communication links. Plans to further explore these topics, as well as related alternative topics, are also discussed.
