Ambient Scatter Communications (ASC) is an emergent technology which promises low-power, low-cost, and "regulation-free" wireless communications, employing previously modulated propagating electromagnetic waves as the RF Carrier to transport an ulterior message. To date, Ambient Scatter Communication Systems (ASCS) have been severely range limited, the largest constraining factor being Primary User Interference (PUI), the non-scattered waveform traveling directly from ambient source to receiver, which will overload hardware and obscure the intended message. This work offers a foundational description of the unique aspects pertaining to ASC and presents a first-of-its-kind prototype, designed upon the express goal of PUI mitigation, whose performance indicates the possibility for extended range ability in next generation systems.
