Portman Prize Critic Lecture: Andrea P. Leers presents 'Somewhere, Something, Someone'

SOMEWHERE demands we look at climate, ecology, topography, geography, culture, history, and urban fabric; SOMETHING leads to investigation of transformed natural materials and new fabrications for higher energy and experiential performance; SOMEONE leads us to create spaces of well-being that support community and social interaction, and enable the human experience of comfort, welcome, and delight. This presentation will share our approach to integrative thinking and simultaneity in examples of recent work.

Andrea P. Leers, FAIA, Principal, Leers Weinzapfel Associates, is the 2023-24 Portman Prize Critic. Her Portman Prize Critic Lecture, Somewhere, Something, Someone will be held October 11, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. in the Reinsch-Pierce Auditorium.
The intractable challenges we face as designers today- climate change, global urbanization, social inequity -seem to demand a deep dive into highly focused investigations. We search for new technical systems, better-performing materials, intelligent landscapes, and more inclusive social processes, and while all these efforts are worthy, even essential, they will not separately satisfy the urgent need. For architects to have agency in the creation of a better physical and human environment, we need to look holistically at the challenges and think simultaneously about the many dimensions of design. Everything, everywhere, all at once.
