Alasdair Young, professor and Neal Family Chair in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, recently briefed U.S. Ambassador to the E.U. Mark Gitenstein on the prospects for transatlantic cooperation on technology regulation.

Young discussed closer U.S.-E.U. cooperation in international standard-setting bodies, as well as efforts to establish common rules in non-yet-regulated areas, such as artificial intelligence. Both of these initiatives are priorities under the U.S.-E.U. Trade and Technology Council, which launched in June 2021.

“The value of these exchanges is in providing policymakers with a longer and broader perspective on current issues and exposing them to outside opinions about what might happen,” Young said.

The briefing was originally scheduled for January but was delayed until recently because of the ambassador’s work dealing with Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine.
