Georgia Tech Honors Juneteenth

Primary tabs

On June 19, 1865 — More than two years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation — enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free from bondage.

Campus will be closed on Monday, June 20, 2022, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Juneteenth also called “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day” is a day to celebrate the freedom of African Americans from slavery in the United States. Those who value freedom, human rights, and a future where everyone can pursue happiness equally also celebrate this day.

On Friday, June 17, 2022, 11 - 3 p.m., The Office of Minority Educational Development within Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, along with Student Diversity Programs in the Division of Student Engagement and Well-Being, will host the second annual Georgia Tech Juneteenth celebration. Contact Jelani Liddell at jelani@gatech.edu for more information.
