Abstract: The objective of the proposed research is to fill the theoretical gap of occluding boundaries to better understand the local structures of them, and to improve the variational 3D reconstruction algorithms. In the course of previous research, we were motivated by various usages of occluding boundaries and occluding tangents in 3D region-based variational problems such as 2D/3D registration, region-based variational 3D reconstruction, etc., while theoretical understandings towards occluding boundaries remain unknown. Additionally, commercial depth cameras are becoming more and more affordable, leading to study multi-view 3D reconstruction from depth maps. To these ends, we have completed the theoretical derivation of occluding tangents free from data representations and prepared the scheme of depth data preprocessing for the subsequent variational depth carving algorithm. For future work, we expect the new theorem to better assist variational 3D reconstruction problems.
