Summary:
Healthcare has been the focus of research and industry attention as a domain where technologies can play a role in supporting and enhancing current care provision and practices. Prominent efforts in this space have taken the form of patient-generated health data and other health tracking approaches, patient empowerment through information and communication technologies (ICTs), remote monitoring, and remote care technologies, largely taking a predominantly patient-centered approach to design. With emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and mobile sensing increasingly being leveraged towards healthcare use cases, there is an urgent need to understand not only how such technologies support and enable caregiving practices, but also how they can support other stakeholders in a patient's care ecology towards improving overall health outcomes.
My proposal examines caregiving relationships and interactions, and how emerging technologies can support and augment them. Taking an ecological perspective to caregiving, my research investigates how AI technologies like conversational agents, and mobile and wearable sensing technologies can support collaborative care. I use qualitative and design research methods to study the opportunities and challenges for emerging technologies to improve formal and informal caregiving practices. In my completed work, I surfaced the situated sociocultural factors influencing ICT adoption and rejection in caregiving. In my proposed work, I delve into how emerging technologies might be designed to be incorporated into care ecologies and support caregiving practices. Through investigating the adoption of these technology-augmented caregiving practices, my research seeks to make empirical and theoretical contributions towards understanding the future of care work.
