Composites, Automation and Data in Aerospace Manufacturing

Primary tabs

Abstract: Composites materials have enabled improved airplane performance and reduced manufacturing costs.  Market demand drives higher production rates which will push the manufacturing of aerospace products towards more automated composite fabrication & assembly.  Additionally, fabrication and assembly will require process control, insitu measurement and data systems to achieve rate, quality and safety in aerospace factories.  This presentation will highlight some of the challenges and opportunities facing higher rate composite airplane production.

Bio: Jerry Young (Senior Director, retired, The Boeing Company) has 36 years of experience in design, analysis and production of aerospace products. Most recently, he led Advanced Manufacturing & Materials for Boeing Commercial Airplane’s Product Strategy and Future Airplane Development organization with responsibility for developing the production system for Boeing’s future products and maturing and inserting new materials and manufacturing processes in existing products and production systems.   Prior to this assignment, Jerry led Materials & Manufacturing Technology for Boeing Research & Technology with responsibility for 750,000 sq-ft of laboratories and 1100 engineers and scientists striving to find, mature and implement technologies which improve Boeing’s products and production systems.

Jerry has directed more than $1B of internal and contract research and development and worked on a variety of developmental products for Boeing’s defense and commercial businesses including B2, JSF, F22, 777 and 787.  He holds a BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Utah and is a graduate of the Advanced Management Program at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. He also holds four patents, authored a number of technical papers and is a member of ASME and SAMPE.
