Transportation

Primary tabs

The transportation sector is vital for economic growth. Providing the physical networks and services upon which the economy and society depends for the movement of people and goods, the transportation sector plays an essential role in supporting economic diversification and regional development. But the sector is also the primary contributor to our oil dependency, responsible for about 70% of petroleum consumption, and is responsible for more than a quarter of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, which have been linked to climate change.

Through The Georgia Transportation Institute and The National Center for Transportation Systems Productivity and Management Georgia Tech is working with academic institutions throughout the Southeast region to develop solutions for a wide range of transportation concerns – from policy and planning, to transportation technology, infrastructure, and traffic operations. In the face of growing global concerns about climate change and the environmental impact of our dependence on fossil fuel resources, new strategies are needed that balance economic growth with sustainable practices and responsible stewardship of our energy resources. From the development of ultra-lightweight vehicles and aircraft and alternative transportation fuels to regional planning and development, Georgia Tech researchers are dedicated to developing more efficient and sustainable transportation systems across the nation and worldwide.
