Title:  Energy-Saving CMOS Switched-Inductor Power Supplies for Portable Applications

Abstract: The aim of this research is to develop, implement, and verify design-optimization and energy-saving techniques for compact CMOS switched-inductor power supplies. Switched inductors are ubiquitous in electronics because they can consume a small fraction of the power they supply. Small inductors and CMOS switches, however, can still burn 10% to 70% of the power they transfer, especially when supplying wide-ranging loads. This is why the State-of-the-Art balances ohmic and gate-drive power in switches, scales channel widths with output current, and recycles some of the charge used to switch transistors. But more can be done. This research seeks to optimize drivers, switching frequency, inductance, and inductor current and save and recover more left-over charge in the system. This way, with more optimization and savings, batteries can conserve and avail more "usable" energy.
