In this lecture for Lawrence Technological University, Dr. Eric Schatzberg, Professor and Chair in the School of History and Sociology, will defend technology against its critics from the humanities.
These critics view technology as uncreative and devoid of moral values, a mere means serving hidden ends, and even a threat to humanity itself. With just a few exceptions, most humanist critics of technology know little about the subject. Yet technology desperately needs informed criticism. The best critiques, both in the present and the past, come from reflective practitioners, technical experts with humanistic sensibilities. Universities can nurture these sensibilities by integrating humanistic perspectives into technical education, especially the education of engineers and computer scientists.
