Invited Speaker Seminar Series Summer 2020

A brief summary of Jessica Mark Welch's research:

 How microbes are spatially organized is a fundamental question in microbial ecology about which little is known.  Spatial organization in a host-associated microbial community is a reflection of dynamic interactions within the community and between the community and its eukaryotic host.  My research uses multiplexed fluorescence in situ hybridization and spectral imaging to investigate the spatial organization of microbial communities in the human mouth, in the vertebrate gut, and in marine environments.  These imaging results generate testable hypotheses about specific taxon-taxon interactions and about the role of the host in shaping microbiome community structure.
