Talk Title:  Image Processing-Based Functional Imaging from Dynamic Computed Tomography

Talk Abstract: Computed tomography derived functional imaging (CTFI) is a novel image processing modality that uses optimization-based approaches to 1) recover lung motion and 2) generate high-resolution pulmonary ventilation and perfusion images from dynamic computed tomography (often referred to as 4DCT). The mathematical derivation and numerical implementation of CTFI, as well as its current applications in radiation oncology and emergency medicine will be presented.

Bio: Edward Castillo is a Research Scientist at the Beaumont Health Research Institute in Royal Oak, MI and an Adjunct Associate Professor of Computational and Applied Mathematics (CAAM) at Rice University in Houston, TX. After receiving his PhD in CAAM from Rice University in 2007, he was a postdoctoral scholar in Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine until 2009. For the past ten years, Dr. Castillo has been active in medical image analysis research, first as an Assistant Professor in Radiation Oncology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center (2009-2014) and now at Beaumont Health. He has published over 45 peer-reviewed articles and 50 conference abstracts, and has been awarded several research grants including an NIH/NCI Academic-Industry Partnership R01 grant, the NIH Loan Repayment (LRP) Award, and the Michigan Translational Research and Commercialization (Mi-TRAC) Mid-Stage Funding Award.
