Abstract:
The objective of the proposed research is to develop standardized utility interfaces for resilient distribution systems and to simplify the integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids with the grid. The growing penetration of DERs and microgrids is leading to fundamental changes in power system planning, operations, and control at an unprecedented scope and speed. Utilities and their interconnection processes are struggling to cope with the numerous issues associated with high DER/microgrid penetration. The proposed research identifies the major integration and operational challenges faced by utilities with high DER/microgrid penetration, the ever-evolving standards, and challenges with current solutions. An Island Interconnection Device is proposed as a utility-owned and controlled microgrid-grid interface which enables a simplified approach to integrate microgrids with the grid while meeting the ever-evolving interconnection standards and not requiring an interconnection study. In addition to enforcing the rules for interconnection set by the utility, this approach will allow for microgrid components and control algorithms to be deployed in the microgrid without potentially affecting grid operations or limiting microgrid functionality. Further, with microgrids gaining attention as a resiliency resource in the face of increasing extreme weather events, a novel approach using Island Interconnection Devices for seamless connection of multiple islanded microgrids to form a networked microgrid and reconnect with the grid in a truly decentralized fashion is proposed. This approach is integral for bottom-up black-start and service restoration of distribution feeders when considering decentralized geographically dispersed microgrids with numerous DERs.
