Final GTMI Lunch and Learn of the Semester (Online Format) - Beer Cans to Pickup Trucks, the Science and Technology Behind Flat Rolled Aluminum Products

Primary tabs

Due to the current public health situation involving the COVID-19 pandemic, we will provide the GTMI Lunch and Learn sessions via an online format. The connection details are shown below. Please keep an eye out for next semester's Lunch and Learn schedule.

The Georgia Tech Manufacturing Institute (GTMI) hosts a Lunch and Learn Series each semester. Sessions are held every Monday virtually from Noon to 1 p.m. These sessions are excellent opportunities to share with students, faculty and others about advanced manufacturing research including the relevant issues and challenges; innovative manufacturing equipment, facilities, or technologies; the capabilities and needs of industrial manufacturers; rapid prototyping for startups; and employment/workforce training opportunities for engineering students that are considering a manufacturing career.

Enjoy networking with your peers, and great information from our speakers. Registration is not required. Past presenters include Georgia Tech lead researchers; as well as external academic, industry, and government partners.

Abstract: Novelis is the world leader in flat rolled Aluminum products as well as aluminum recycling. Our products can be found in everything from beer cans, to pickup trucks, and electronic devices. Each of these products requires unique specifications ranging from mechanical properties to surface quality. A major challenge is developing production friendly surface treatment processes that can be applied uniformly, consistently, and over large areas, at high speed. Here we will review manufacturing processes and some of the challenges associated with the manufacturing of flat rolled aluminum products.

Bio: Thomas Beck (TJ) is a Sr. Scientist in the surface science group at the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center (NGRTC) in Kennesaw, GA. While at Novelis TJ has led multiple exploratory projects investigating novel surface treatment processes as well as serving as a subject matter expert in the areas of failure analysis and material characterization. TJ has played a key role in creating the forensic analysis lab at the NGRTC, enabling cross functional root cause analysis of many challenging issues.  In addition to these roles he has had the opportunity to work with teams exploring technologies which have the potential for creating new business opportunities for Novelis. Prior to joining Novelis, TJ worked at the Institute for Electronics and Nanotechnology where he worked on developing various nano and microfabrication processes for both internal and external customers.
