Speaker: James N. Stanford, Associate Professor of Linguistics, Dartmouth College

James Stanford (Associate Professor of Linguistics at Dartmouth College) researches sociolinguistics -- the social pressures and ideologies leading different people to speak differently across society and across contexts -- from a quantitative perspective.  Dr. Stanford has studied changes over time in the vowels and accents of New England, where he works, as well as social dimensions of minority languages of China, where he has spent much of his time.  His talk will introduce the goals and methods of quantitative sociolinguistics, with examples from both North America and Asia.
