MASS Design Group Film Screening
Primary tabs
MODA (Museum of Design Atlanta), the SimTigrate Design Lab, and the School of Architecture will present screenings of two films by MASS Design Group, "Design That Heals" and "Made in Illima," on March 14, 2019. Both films demonstrate great examples of using both design and the design-build process to benefit the public good.
"Design That Heals"
In 2010, in the midst of the world’s worst cholera outbreak in over a century, MASS Design Group was challenged to design a cholera treatment center where the construction process, as well as the finished building, could address the underlying structural and social conditions that allow cholera to thrive. This is the subject of "Design That Heals," a new documentary that portrays the challenges, innovations, and triumph of the project, proving that, “Architecture and health are inseparable.” (Dr. Jean-William Pape, GHESKIO founder)
Running Time: 31 minutes | Directed by Thatcher Bean
"Made in Illima"
In the center of Equator Province, Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ilima community remains one of the most isolated in the world. They have coexisted with endangered wildlife in their surrounding forest for generations, but as the pace of development has increased, this fragile ecosystem has suffered. They partnered with the African Wildlife Foundation and our architecture firm, MASS Design Group, in 2012 to create a new conservation-focused primary school and community center. This film documents our collective building process — one aimed at leveraging local craft and ecological knowledge towards education, preservation, and beauty.
Running time: 65 minutes | Directed by Thatcher Bean
