Bicycling at Georgia Tech: What Your Student Needs to Know

Primary tabs

It has never been safer or more convenient to navigate Georgia Tech’s campus by bike. In 2016, Georgia Tech was named a Gold level Bike Friendly University, and, in 2017, People for Bikes named PATH Parkway, which connects Midtown and Downtown along the west side of campus, the top new bikeway in the United States.

There are many programs to help your child tackle Tech on two wheels:

  • Rent a bike: Students can take advantage of discounted membership rates for Atlanta’s citywide Relay Bike Share program. The Georgia Tech program, BuzzBikes, also offers bicycles for rent by the semester.

  • Purchase a pre-owned bike: Students can purchase pre-owned bicycles from Starter Bikes, an organization run by student volunteers that is dedicated to helping students fix and maintain their bikes. Starter Bikes is open Fridays from 4:00-6:00 PM in the CRC parking deck.

  • Take a safety class: How can your student feel more safe and confident on a bike? Attend one of the monthly bike safety classes at the CRC. Participants learn the rules of the road and tips for being visible, alert, and safe. The class is free to attend and includes giveaways such as lights and helmets.

  • Register your bike: The Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) can add your student’s bike to the National Bike Registry, a database that allows police departments across the country to contact you if your bike is stolen and recovered. Registration, along with use of a U-lock, will significantly reduce the risk of bicycle theft.

  • Find your route: Google Maps makes it easy to locate the bike lanes and paths on campus. Students who live off-campus can take advantage of bike lanes that connect to Midtown, West Midtown, and Home Park. Bicycle parking is available outside almost every academic building, and secured bicycle parking is available inside residence halls.
