“Badass Beauty Queen” may have a glittery title and artwork on the surface, but has tremendous depths. It tells the story of Anastasia, who was born and raised in China, but moved to Canada when she was 13. That was when she learned that what she was taught in school about her native country was far from the true picture. Over the years, she turned her focus on the Chinese people, advocating for their human rights.

The film is about Anastasia’s attempts to speak up for human rights for her people, which includes running for and winning Miss World Canada. She was inspired by a former Miss Canada, who used the same platform — with the motto “Beauty with a Purpose” — to expose the violence against women in her country, Iran. The film depicts really well how the Chinese regime would try to silence those exposing their human rights violations. But it also shows how a UK-based company, Miss World Organization, tries to silence the same act in Washington DC, United States.
