Alternative Service Breaks

Primary tabs

The Center for Student Engagement is pleased to announce that the student organization, Alternative Service Breaks (ASB), will host seven ASB trips during spring break, March 17 – 24, 2018. ASB trips are group-oriented community service trips held during Institute breaks in collaboration with Student Engagement. Each trip includes two student leaders and two staff advisors as well as student participants; the teams represent a diversity of majors, campus engagements, and service experiences as well as staff from different departments across the Institute. This allows ASB to bring together members of the Tech community who may not meet otherwise. In addition to fostering leadership and service, ASB trips emphasize critical reflection and positive group dynamics. Through daily reflection, student leaders encourage participants to deepen their understanding of the trips’ focus areas, to examine and develop their own leadership style, and to positively contribute the 24/7 group experience.

The 2018 ASB spring break trip locations and service projects are noted below. ASB is especially excited to expand to the west coast by hosting its first trip to California while also maintaining strong partnerships with sites like Jacksonville, FL where ASB has served each year since 2010. Biloxi, MS (Community Collaborations – Early Childhood Education)

  • Concord, NC (Habitat for Humanity – Affordable Housing)
  • Jacksonville, FL (Habitat for Humanity – Affordable Housing)
  • Maryville, TN (Once Upon a Time – Environmental Preservation)
  • Oakland, CA (Community Collaborations – Community Sustainability)
  • Dominican Republic (Outreach 360 – Teaching English)

These spring break trips are seven of the 12 total trips that ASB will have offered to Tech students during the 2017-2018 academic year; ASB hosted three fall break trips (Asheville, NC; Cherokee, NC; and Columbia, SC); one winter break trip (Port Arthur, TX); and will host one summer break trip in May (Belize).
