African-American seamstress Rosa Parks (1913-2005) gained national attention in 1955 when she was arrested for refusing to relinquish her seat to a white passenger on a crowded bus in Alabama. Her courageous act sparked the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott, and she became an icon of the fight to end racial segregation, recognized by Congress as the "first lady of civil rights."
