Hund's Rules are Merely Suggestions: Relativistic Effects Deep Into the Periodic Table

Primary tabs

This presentation will provide an understanding for the differences in electronic structure between heavy elements, especially in the actinides berkelium and californium, and lighter ones.

Thomas Albrect-Schmitt will delve into how relativistic effects drastically alter chemistry and break the rules that we have been taught for how to think about electronic structure.

He will show that the changes that occur after curium result in the onset of chemistry not observed in lighter actinides and is more akin to that found in high-oxidation-state transition metals.
