SOMEONE ELSE’S PROBLEM NO MORE: How to Gain Competitive Advantage through the Sustainability Ownership Experience

Primary tabs

The Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business at the Scheller College of Business in Georgia Tech welcomes CB Bhattacharya, Professor and H.J. Zoffer Chair in Sustainability and Ethics, at the Katz Graduate School of Business University of Pittsburgh.

While most companies talk the talk of sustainability, very few walk the walk. Unsurprisingly, carbon emissions by the world’s largest companies are increasing, and only one third of the 600 largest companies in the U.S. have any sustainability oversight at the Board level.

Bhattacharya has interviewed well over 100 CEO’s, C-suite, middle managers, and shop floor workers in 25+ companies across the world to understand what separates the best from the rest. In one word, the answer is ownership: companies that are winning the sustainability battle have created the conditions for their stakeholders to own sustainability. Psychological ownership is a powerful concept that refers to feelings of possessiveness and connection that we develop toward an appealing object such as a person, company, or even an idea, and he contends we can use to drive sustainability through the organization. Based on my research, he shall present a three-phase model that shows how companies can move beyond rhetoric and take ownership of sustainability so that it’s someone else’s problem no more.

Dr. Bhattachraya received his PhD in Marketing from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1993, his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in 1984 and his Bachelors (with Honors in Economics) from St. Stephens College, Delhi in 1982. Before joining ESMT in 2009, he was the Everett W. Lord Distinguished Scholar and Professor of Marketing at the School of Management at Boston University. Before joining Boston University, he was on the faculty at the Goizueta Business School, Emory University. Prior to his PhD, he worked for three years as a Product Manager in Reckitt Benckiser plc.
