The School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Fall 2017 Seminar Series Presents: Recent Advances in Idealized Modeling

Yi Ming, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory/NOAA

Idealized models are important tools for understanding the behaviors of comprehensive climate models, and for addressing some of the fundamental questions in atmospheric science. In this talk, I will discuss two new additions to the model hierarchy, namely a dry GCM with passive water vapor and clouds (http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-16-0812.1), and a highly simplified moist GCM with full radiative transfer, and substantiate their utility in understanding mid-latitude cloud feedback and ITCZ location.
